What is Biomechanics?

Biomechanics simply means the analysis of human movement. Here at PhysioDirect our trained physiotherapists use biomechanics assessment to diagnose pain related to inefficient movement, or help improve performance in both amateur and professional athletes.

When Might an Assessment be Useful?

If you have reoccurring injuries, niggling pains in one or more areas of the body that you cant recall injuring, or general pain when running or performing repetitive tasks in sport then biomechanical assessment may be helpful in identifying and correcting the problem.

What Can Biomechanics Treat?

  • Knee pain
  • Foot and Ankle pain
  • Hip and back pain
  • Recurrent muscle strains
  • Plantar Fasciitis
  • Calf pain
  • Shin splints
  • Ankle sprains and instability
  • Suboptimal athletic performance

What to Expect

Assessment will usually involve analysis of gait (walking or running pattern) on a treadmill, either by eye or video analysis which can be slowed down to observe movements more critically. If you have a sporting problem then other specific movement patterns may be analysed to identify your problem. This is usually combined with information about the history of your injury and other muscle and joint tests to give a diagnosis. An individualised treatment program can then be provided to help correct your problem.

What to Bring With You

If you are a runner then please bring your usual running shoes and a pair of shorts. If you have any other sporting injury, then also bring any kit that may be related to the problem (like your tennis racket for example). Work shoes may also be useful to bring if you have a lower limb problem that is worse at work.
